Gwinnett County, GA, one of metro Atlanta's largest counties, was created in 1818 and was named after Button Gwinnett, one of Georgia's three signers of the Declaration of Independence. A famous name rather than a famous man, Gwinnett never set foot in the county that bears his name. Gwinnett grew quickly as a prosperous agricultural and railroad community throughout the 1800's, however the peaceful farming community was disrupted when General Sherman cut a swath through Atlanta in the heat of the Civil War. While skirmishes within the county lines were rare, widespread Atlanta destruction changed Gwinnett's economy and lifestyle, and rebuilding continued for years following the Civil War.

Small towns continued to incorporate throughout Gwinnett, and by the late 1940's, 13 of Gwinnett County's fifteen cities had been officially chartered. Gwinnett was swept into the modern era when Buford Dam, located in north Gwinnett County, was developed. The result was the creation of Lake Sidney Lanier, Georgia's largest manmade lake, which precipitated the development of Georgia's number two industry - tourism. Enormous growth and affluence has defined Gwinnett County in the past twenty years, and for much of the 1980's Gwinnett held the title of the "Fastest Growing County in the U.S." Renowned not only as a home for high-tech businesses and Fortune 500 corporations, Gwinnett is now the home of Atlanta's best shopping, golf and affordable accommodations.

There are eleven separate communities that comprise Gwinnett County. These include Berkeley Lake, Buford, Dacula, Duluth, Grayson, Lawrenceville, Lilburn, Norcross, Snellville, Sugar Hill, and Suwanee

Each of Gwinnett County's cities maintains its own unique charms and distinctive environments. But they share commonalities such as strong local economies, top-notch public school districts, vibrant commercial districts, and serene residential neighborhoods. With so much to offer, Gwinnett County has been a popular destination for singles, seniors, and families alike.

Residents here tend to be well educated, with many locals employed in a professional or managerial capacity. The average household income in Gwinnett County is well above the national average, coming in at over $60,000 per year.

Duluth maintains the feel of a close-knit small city, but offers its residents all of the amenities and services of a much larger city. The city's Parks and Recreation department organizes a year-round calendar sports leagues and tournaments for residents of all ages. Golf and tennis are both popular pastimes, and you will find municipal courts and courses dotted throughout Duluth and the surrounding region.

The neighboring city of Lawrenceville is the County Seat of Gwinnett County. With the city's roots dating back to the early 1800's, Lawrenceville boasts the distinction of being the second-oldest city in the area. Lawrenceville's main feature is its inviting downtown district, which has recently undergone a wonderful period of revitalization. Today, you will find a pedestrian-friendly area that invites locals to take a leisurely stroll, admiring such sights as the Gwinnett History Museum.

Gwinnett County offers its residents easy access to a major metropolitan area, while allowing them to live in a close-knit suburban environment.
